"Sail Away" Mixed media on canvas 24 x 36 inches
Char Baxter 2024
In this piece, I was exploring the unfinished dreams of the same boy. Partially obscured by a veil of netting, he peers at a paintbrush also kept prisoner by the net. Beneath him is a treasure of timepieces, keys and cogs.
Will he find the answers there or will he keep sailing, wondering, into the future?
"Still unpacking, exploring the past with a fantastical ship holding that same young boy hostage. Where did he go in his life? What could he tell me now? Will my paintbrush be the key?"
The Process
Planning
I painted deep-toned watercolors that spoke to me of seas and storms. I combined those with Amate papers I had dyed in dark blues and purples.
Auditioning
Netting became an important messenger in this piece. I used it to imprison the paintbrush and partially obscure my grandfather's boyhood face.
Finalizing the elements
After much evaluation, I finalized the position of the elements and began sewing them to the canvas. I used artficial sinews and embellishing threads.
Detail
Watercolors underneath the netting and treasure of old skeleton keys, cogs and stones create intrigue and questions ... both ingredients of good storytelling.
